Summer Reading for Fall 2018

Incoming Seventh Graders

Updated June 2018.

Incoming Seventh Graders (standard level - not honors)

Incoming seventh-graders in standard level English will be able to earn extra credit in their English classes if they read one of the following three novels and take a multiple choice test on the novel during the first week of school.

Choices for seventh grade - standard level students:

  1. Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan
  2. The Magician's Nephew by C.S. Lewis
  3. Hoot by Carl Hiaasen

If you need help securing a copy of the novel, please contact Mrs. Tolles at ctolles@nmusd.us

Incoming Seventh Graders (Literature and Composition I)

Honors (Literature and Composition I) students will turn in an assignment on the first day of school on the novel Hoot by Carl Hiaasen.  Please read the summer assignment paper carefully and follow all directions for the worksheet.  You can find all of the files in the locker to the right.

If you need help securing a copy of the novel, please contact Mrs. Tolles at ctolles@nmusd.us

Incoming Eighth Graders

Eighth Grade Literature and Composition II Summer Reading

Choose one of the following three texts to read over the summer and complete the attached assignment.

  • Call of the Wild written by Jack London
  • Tangerine written by Edward Bloor
  • The Outsiders written by S.E. Hinton

The texts are listed from the most rigorous to the least and it is our hope that you choose a text that is both interesting and challenging to you.

This summer assignment is your first opportunity to make an impression on your eighth grade Literature and Composition II teacher and we encourage you to strive to perform your best and start your eighth grade year on a path towards excellence!

We will spend the first two weeks of school working with your chosen text. While annotations are not required, they are highly recommended as they help any reader gain a greater understanding of the text with which they are interacting. Your essay will address the theme of your chosen novel, so keep some possible themes in mind as you read. We will also be taking a basic reading comprehension test within the first few days of school to verify your completion of the novel.

Over the summer, you must read the novel and complete the attached assignment.  Please bring a copy of the novel to class for the first two weeks of school. If you cannot obtain your own copy of a book, contact Mrs. Reilly at areilly@nmusd.us or the front office for a novel you can borrow.

We look forward to meeting you and seeing what you have to offer in the way of insight into these texts.

Happy reading!

Mrs. Arrow, Mrs. Gunz, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Levy, and Mrs. Reilly
