AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and supports students in the middle, the most underserved population on school campuses across the nation. In its 30th year, AVID is established in 49 states, Australia, Canada, and all military bases around the world.

The goal of Ensign's AVID is to prepare students for college prep classes in high school by introducing and supporting them in rigorous academic experiences. This is managed, in part, through our weekly tutorials held during the regular school day utilizing college students as on-site tutors. Included in Ensign's AVID curriculum is a writing-inquiry-collaborative-reading based approach, known as W-I-C-R, which strengthens and enhances all curricular areas. In addition, students will be involved in career exploration through "The Real Game California," which brings context to their core classes.

To be part of the AVID program, students apply in the spring of each school year and are subsequently interviewed by the respective AVID teachers for inclusion in the next year's program.

The AVID Student

AVID targets students in the academic middle - those with a GPA range of 2.0 to 3.5 - who have historically shown excellent behavior and are willing to make the commitment in this elective class through high school.  These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum, but may be falling short of their potential.  Typically, they will be the first generation in their families to complete college. In many cases, their visits to a college campus are their first while being a part of the AVID Program. The AVID classroom provides the environment in which students can truly achieve their college goals if they are determined to do so.
